DISPELLING URBAN MYTHS

Q – WHAT IS AN URBAN MYTH?

A- A false concept (no basis of fact) told as true, repeated over and over until people actually believe it. Thirteen (13) of these urban myths are listed below.

Myth #1 – WE NEED 8 GLASSES OF WATER PER DAY.

A- Absolutely not! Add up all the liquids (juice, soup, tea, coffee, etc) plus realize that vegetables/fruits are 95% water; so adding excessive water will dilute nutrients in your foods (malabsorption) and overwork your bladder causing incontinence/frequency/urgency/nocturnal voids.

Myth #2 – SALT CAUSES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

A- This is absurd! Maybe 1% of the population could have an allergic reaction (water retention) but sodium is an essential mineral. You need at least 2,000 mg. per day but be sure to use top-of-the-line healthiest one called Himalayan Salt available in health food stores and Trader Joe’s.

Myth #3 – MEDICATIONS SAVE LIVES.

A- Only in rare cases is this true. Most people would live longer without drugs. One common thread among centenarians is they use fewer or no medications. Most health issues are handled with alternative modalities but for safety, follow your doctor’s advice.

Myth #4 – ALL FATS ARE BAD.

A- Without fats you’ll experience serious nutritional deficiencies. These valuable fats come in the form of avocados, seeds, nuts, olive oil, krill oil (much safer than fish oil), omega 3 organic eggs, wild salmon, sardines, and best of all organic coconut oil.

Myth #5 – ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS ARE BETTER THAN SUGAR.

A- Not true! Sweet‘N Low, Aspartame, Saccharin, Splenda, and NutraSweet have all been linked to serious side effects including cancer and weight gain. The only non-caloric sweetener I recommend is Stevia, an herb in the chrysanthemum family native to Paraguay. Stevia is safe for diabetics and is widely used as a sweetener around the world, especially in Japan and Brazil.

Myth #6 – AN ASPIRIN PER DAY IS A HEALTHY CHOICE.

A- No way! Aspirin can cause bleeding (especially gastrointestinal), ulcers, esophagitis, bone marrow toxicity, platelet destruction, and aplastic anemia. L-arginine and/or Nattokinase would be much healthier choices.

Myth #7 – COFFEE IS A DANGEROUS CHOICE.

A- The real danger is in the huge amount of pesticides in coffee. Purchase organic coffee, drink no more than 2 cups per day, and coffee is beneficial.

Myth #8 – WHEAT BREAD IS HEALTHY.

A- Breads are 50% gluten which can lead to diarrhea, chronic fatigue, foggy thinking, diabetes, leaky gut, sluggish metabolism, and obesity. A healthy solution is Ezekiel Sprouted Wheat Bread which has almost no gluten.

Myth #9 – MILK IS A GOOD SOURCE OF CALCIUM.

A- Not only do we barely absorb the calcium in cow’s milk (especially if pasteurized), but to make matters worse, it actually creates mucus and increases calcium loss from the bones. Use Organic Coconut milk instead. Rich sources of calcium are oatmeal, sesame seeds, turnip greens, oranges, almonds, black-eyed peas, kale, bok choy, figs, sardines, wild salmon, and white beans.

Myth #10 – FLUORIDE IS GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH.

A- Fluoride in water and toothpaste is actually a poison. It damages the teeth (mottling) and causes osteoporosis. It has a devastating effect on just about every vital organ and also interferes with enzyme systems.

Myth #11 – PEANUTS ARE A HEALTHY NUT.

A- Peanuts are not a nut; they are a legume. They grow on a vine so are susceptible to aflatoxin fungus that can cause liver cancer. They are a poor source of nutrition. Almonds are the healthiest nut.

Myth #12 – EGGS ARE BAD BECAUSE THEY RAISE CHOLESTEROL.

A- Eggs are the healthiest complete protein (all 9 amino acids) with 6 grams in each egg. Organic eggs are the best choice because they contain up to 2,000 mg. of lecithin which keeps the bad cholesterol low. (i.e. Egg Beaters are processed egg whites and dangerous chemicals-not healthy).

Myth #13 – BUTTER SUBSTITUTES ARE HEALTHIER THAN REAL BUTTER.

A- Not at all true…man made substitutes contain deadly trans fats, artificial flavors and soybean oil (GMO) causing heart disease and obesity.
