DO YOU HAVE A HEALTHY THYROID?

Your thyroid could be sabotaging your weight goal!

Q – HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR THYROID?

A – Extremely important and a key factor responsible for producing the master metabolism hormones that control every function in your body! Research tells us that as many as 40% of people in the U.S. have a suboptimal thyroid function.

Q -WHAT DOES A HEALTHY THYROID DO FOR YOU?

A:

  •  increases metabolism so you can lose weight
  •   makes your hair healthier and thicker
  •   lets you wake up feeling refreshed
  •   prevents fibrocystic breast disease
  •   helps dry skin and winter itch
  •   prevents depression
  •   lowers cholesterol
  •   improves memory
  •   increases energy

Q – WHERE IS THE THYROID LOCATED?

A – It is a butterfly shaped gland in the front of the throat right under your larynx or voice box. It is responsible for the production of the hormone, thyroxin.

Q – CAN MY DOCTOR ORDER A BLOOD TEST FOR THYROID FUNCTION?

A – Yes, but blood tests are worthless because the thyroid only secretes about a teaspoon of thyroxin in the bloodstream at any given time. This is too minuscule an amount to be accurate for diagnosing borderline thyroid problems. However, serious thyroid problems can be seen in blood by a TSH test which should be between 1 and 1.5.

Q – SO WHAT TEST DO YOU RECOMMEND?

A – The most accurate test is a 24 hour urine collection taken at home and sent to the Meridian Lab in Washington state.

Q – IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO TEST THE THYROID BESIDES SYMPTOMS AND URINE TESTING?

A – Dr. Barnes suggests a temperature test.  Shake down an old fashioned mercury thermometer. Place it by your bed so first in the morning, before rising you can test your under arm temperature for exactly 10 minutes.  If your thyroid is healthy, the temperature should be 97.6 or higher.

Q – WHAT FACTORS CAN RUIN MY THYROID?

A – The 4 main culprits are gluten, soy, stress, GMOs, and bromines.

Q – WHERE ARE BROMINES FOUND?

A – They’re in pesticides, plastics, soft drinks and fire retardants (used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery and mattresses).

Q – WHICH FOODS ARE GOOD FOR THE THYROID?

A – Radishes, cabbage, broccoli and kale because they boost glutathione which improves thyroid function. Other beneficial foods are peas, squash, bell peppers, carrots, green beans, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, asparagus, mangoes, blueberries, kiwi, apples, cherries, and apricots.

Q – CAN AN IODINE DEFICIENCY CAUSE POOR THYROID FUNCTION?

A – Yes!  The thyroid cannot function without iodine. An iodine deficiency is even a contributing factor in breast cancer!

Q – HOW CAN I CHECK TO SEE IF I HAVE AN IODINE DEFICIENCY?

A – Before bed, use tincture of iodine to paint a 3-inch square patch on the inside of your forearm, the inside of a thigh, or your abdomen.  The next morning, inspect the painted area. If all the color remains, then your iodine level is adequate. If all the color is gone, then you definitely have an iodine deficiency. Varying degrees of color loss correspond to your degree of iodine deficiency.

Q – ARE THERE IODINE RICH FOODS THAT I CAN ADD TO MY DIET?

A – Yes…sea greens (chlorella, spirulina, kombu, wakame), organic  eggs, wild salmon, sardines, mushrooms, root vegetables, kelp, garlic, onions, and watercress are all rich in iodine.

Q – HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE THYROID?

A – Mail a self-addressed stamped (2 stamps) envelope to Dr. Joyce Johnson, 1131 Rainbow Valley Blvd, Fallbrook CA 92028 for a FREE handout about achieving a healthy thyroid.
