HEART HEALTH

by Joyce Johnson, President of Wellness Center of America

Q – WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE SYMPTOM OF HEART DISEASE?

A – Death because there usually are no symptoms. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. And heart disease is usually a silent killer. The first sign of cardiovascular disease is commonly a heart attack, and sadly, over one-third of heart attacks are fatal.

Q – THEN HOW CAN I TELL IF I’M ON THE VERGE OF A HEART ATTACK?

A – Easy…by ordering blood tests for Cholesterol HDL/LDL, Triglycerides, Platelets, C-Reactive Protein, Homocysteine, and Fibrinogen. We have supplements that balance all of these chemistry risk factors.

Q – WHAT OTHER TEST WILL WARN ME OF A HEART ATTACK?

A – Check your blood pressure every time you’re in a pharmacy. Anything below 150/95 is okay but if higher you need natural herbs to lower your B.P.

Q – WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTOR TO HEART DISEASE?

A – Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. ranking ahead of cancer. The top initiators are obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, stress, and eating unhealthy foods, especially saturated fats. Heredity is an issue but not a death sentence if above listed risk factors are addressed.

Q – SO HOW IMPORTANT IS EXERCISE?

A – Exercise tops the list because it can reduce your weight, blood pressure, stress, triglycerides, plus increases oxygen to the heart. It increases good cholesterol (HDL) while decreasing bad cholesterol (LDL and VLDL). It improves circulation so prevents blood clots.

Q – WHAT EXERCISE IS BEST?

A – Ideally 60 minutes per day of fast walking, 6 days per week, but anything is better than nothing…..climb the stairs, gardening, work out at the gym, walk the dog all count toward your total time.

Q – WHAT IS THE GREATEST RISK FACTOR?

A – Tobacco (even second hand smoke) is the very worst because it damages your heart and blood vessel by narrowing the arteries. This is known as atherosclerosis which leads to a heart attack.

Q- WHAT ARE THE TOP FOOD CHOICES FOR A HEALTHY HEART?

A – Certified organic whole food choices are cayenne pepper, spinach, blueberries, wild salmon, legumes, flaxseed, nuts (not peanuts), oats, broccoli, asparagus, sweet potatoes, and garlic.

Q – WHAT ARE THE TOP FOODS THAT CAUSE A HEART ATTACK?

A – Trans fats, unsaturated fats (hydrogenated), deep fried food, sugar, refined foods, whole fat dairy, red meats, bacon, sausage, and fried chicken. The polyunsaturated fats in vegetable and seed oils encourage the formation of blood clots by increasing platelet stickiness. Coconut oil helps to promote normal platelet function.

Q – SO COCONUT OIL IS A GOOD FAT?

A – Yes because it is a naturally occurring saturated fat helping to promote normal platelet function for free-flowing circulation. Also it raises the protective good cholesterol called HDL.  I use about a cup per day in eggs, cereal, salads, casseroles, baking, just about everything. It tastes fabulous!

Q – HOW ABOUT EGGS?

A – For 40 years, many Americans have deprived themselves of one of the most nutritious foods on the planet, while epidemiological studies repeatedly show that dietary cholesterol is not related to coronary heart disease incidence or mortality; there’s no reason to fear eggs! They must be organic, however, and can be purchased inexpensively at Costco.

Q – DO YOU KNOW HOW TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY HEART RHYTHM?

A – Yes! Rigorous practice of yoga and meditation can help reduce episodes of irregular heartbeat and improve symptoms of anxiety and depression often associated with atrial fibrillation (American College of Cardiology research).

Q – HOW ABOUT FIBER?

A – Many studies sited that fiber-rich foods combat inflammation, a potential trigger for heart attacks, as well as lowered LDL bad cholesterol, thereby clearing the arteries.

Q – WHAT ARE THE BEST FIBER FOODS?

A – Whole grains (non gluten), legumes, vegetables, salads, and whole fruits.

Q – WHAT ABOUT THE STATIN DRUGS PRESCRIBED BY PHYSICIANS?

A – They have some problems because they lower the good HDL cholesterol instead of the bad LDL and VLDL cholesterol. Also they damage the liver.

Q – HOW CAN I RECEIVE MORE INFORMATION?

A – Just call me at (800) 545-6923 for a free Healthy Heart handout or, better yet, order the heart package (includes Healthy Heart booklet, Blood Chemistry book, Mission Impossible book) for only $19.
